Fire Escape

Fire Escape (May, 2007)

LA ArtLab's FIRE ESCAPE show opened May 9, 2007 at Upstairs at the Market Gallery in Downtown Los Angeles. Oddly enough, the show opened on the very same day of the infamous Los Feliz/Griffith Park fire. We swear it had nothing to do with us! (Our show was pretty hot though.)

FIRE ESCAPE presented artwork thematically inspired by the concept of fire. 15 innovative emerging artists from within the LA ArtLab collective created new work for the exhibit. Pieces on display included individual and group installations, mixed media, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and digital media.

The show featured a collaborative group project displayed in the gallery's center room: a wall-to-wall installation entitled Fire Sale, which showcased a briccolage of over 1000 objects hand made or selected by each of the participating artists. The installation was designed to work on both the macro and micro levels in terms of viewer experience. Fire Sale seen as a whole from afar showed a visually unified system of displayed objects and patterns. The piece also reflected, on closer examination, a mix of ideas and concepts based on each individual artist’s point of view regarding the chosen objects. In keeping with the Fire Sale concept, every piece in the installation was for sale. In keeping with LA ArtLab's continuing mission to contribute to the community art large, 50% of all FIRE ESCAPE art sale proceeds and 100% of all donations collected during the two-night event benefited the Firefighters Charitable Foundation.
